EDITORIAL

This review is meant for those who are active, that is, for those working in a laboratory as well as for those who love reading about alchemy and ancient pharmacopoeia. Those who appreciate the very spirit of alchemy. But hermetism is everywhere, in every culture and time, as a way of making possible the creation of metaphors, tales, symbol–evoking operation and, above all, archetypes.

THE ICY DEW OF THE MOUNTAIN GODDESS

The attainment of a long life in Tibetan alchemy - Part 1. We can consider Siddha or Tibetan pharmacopoeia as alchemical because all preparations contain metals or other substances brought to perfection through fire. All those substances are usually used in amounts such as not to have an excessive impact, but rather blend together synergistically with other substances and/or be targeted for specific functions: among these, the most typical is mercury, a dangerous substance which, if well prepared, can however be extremely effective even in a projective way, that is to say "by contact."

OPERATIVE WORK

THE ENIGMA OF PHILOSOPHICAL MERCURY

An operative overview of hermetic philosophy. A series of articles which explore some areas of spagyric and alchemical thought generally only dealt with in a cursory manner in modern, related literature. A viewpoint and conclusions that are born from over thirty years of study and practice in the hermetic science.
By John H Reid III

INNER ATTUNEMENT WITH ONE'S OUTER WORK

During the ritual cleaning and purification of your outer space, you have also cleaned and purified your inner space. Can you imagine what initiatic potential then there is in actual experiments for purifying, elevating, exalting and transforming the principles and essentials of matter?

A SIMPLE ARCANA FOR BEGINNERS

Prepare a Simple or Spagyric Garlic Tincture.

THE GLASS OF ANTIMONY

Operative and alchemical considerations. While antimony was already well established as an ingredient of the glass of many European churches, one of its first appearances as a medication in writing was in Basil Valentine's "Triumphant Chariot of Antimony". Despite being ridiculed by the medical community for using a virulent poison as a medicine, he seemed to have great success, from treating wounds to curing breast cancer, syphilis and leprosy.

HEATING THE SUBSTANCE AGAIN

Distillation, circulation, coobation. Distillation has something magical, we can’t figure out why a substance gets refined through heat and the passing in another container, or even circulating, which is rising and falling in the same glass balloon.

HISTORY

BECCAFUMI

How a Senese painter met alchemy or vice versa. Beccafumi actually did something really alchemic, engraving some symbolic figures, most likely to illustrate a famous Senese book about alchemy: De la Pirotechnia of Vannoccio Biringuccio.

PORTA MAGICA

The Hermetic Door and Villa Palombara. The Porta Magica not contain hidden symbols, but display them in an unmistakable form; they are locations built for alchemy, and nothing else. The Magic Door was opened in 1680 in the wall of the Palombara's "Horto" Above the door is a bas-relief containing symbols already seen in the Rosacrucian work Aurum Seculum Redivivum of 1621, by Henricus Madathanus, from which we reproduce a detail surrounded by four angels.

THE DISCOVERY OF THE CHINESE SOLAR OGRE

This is an ancient Chinese alchemical kiln: a ting. Can you see the "mouth" of the kiln? That's not a devil but a taotie, a solar ogre, and a kind of Bes (the Egyptian god), whose name is the translation of the name Leonardo.

ALCHEMICAL BLUE AND THE UNIO MENTALIS

We removed all the notes from the original text, a chapter from Hillman’s study “Silver and the White Earth”, appeared in an Annual of Archetypal Psychology and Jungian Thought. 1986. You can find the complete chapter in several sites on the web...

THE VERITABLE PARACELSIAN OIL OF HAARLEM

Some formulas regarding sulfur as a polychrest. It is an arcane with many uses, internal and external, and is still considered by many mainstream physicians a treatment for arthritis and gout. It seems this formula was written down by Paracelsus, rediscovered in Leiden and supported by Giuliano Kremmerz in the early twentieth century.

THE ADMIRABLE EFFICACY AND ALMOST INCREDIBLE VIRTUE OF TRUE OIL, MADE OF SULPHUR VIVE SET ON FIRE

Commonly called Oil of Sulphur per Campanam. Of this most noble liquor, not a vulgar medicine, the noble Helmont (1600) in his excellent discourse on THE TREE OF LIFE, wrote...

PHILOSOPHY

NUSHADIR

It is very interesting that good Friar Basilio likes to identify himself with salt of Ammon or Amun: an appropriate practice of inner alchemy.

F.C.H.

We publish this article by an initiate of the FCH, the organization from which come the myth and the operations of Fulcanelli, so Canseliet, and companions.

PHILOSOPHICAL TRANSACTIONS

To begin with alchemy and culture we should take a look at all those cultural organizations which made a difference in the cultural heritage of our world through science, philosophy, art, religion, collecting, archiving or researching. We start with the Royal Society, a controversial but fundamental step for the knowledge of operative alchemy in England and the home of Fludd, Boyle, Newton, and a lot of other philosophers.

ĀYURVEDA AND ALCHEMY

An introduction. The practice of traditional Indian medicine, or Āyurveda, sets a very high, almost impossible objective to the art of medicine: to keep the Positive Health of every living being, according to its specific nature, and to cure the so-called “diseases” when they appear to point out an imbalance.

ALTERNATIVE LIFE

IGHINA: THE EARTHQUAKE STOPPED AT IMOLA

The secret story of an incredible device. We will cover the studies and research of Pier Luigi Ighina, necessarily in general terms, plus one of his inventions in more detail: the earthquake valve, a version of which, in the intentions of its inventor, is useful to dampen the energy of a seismic event around the area in which it is placed.

LAYTONVILLE ECOVILLAGE

An interesting example of sustainable community.
